In March 1999, a summary document
of the charter school initiative with contact information, prepared in both
English and Spanish, was distributed to all 2,500 households in Grant Park. The
following month, teams of parents went door-to-door through traditionally
disenfranchised, lower-income areas of the neighborhood, talking and
distributing information directly to approximately 500 families about plans for
the schools, asking for their input and leaving information about how to become
involved.
