The nomination process for the Neighborhood Charter School's governing board of directors is now beginning. The governing board is the school’s legal representative body. It is responsible for establishing, monitoring, and evaluating the policies and performance of the school. The board is made up of parents/guardians, staff members, and community members.
All parents are encouraged to consider nominating themselves or other parents that they think would be effective board members to serve on the board. It is then the responsibility of the nominating committee to review the nominees and develop a recommended slate of nominees to be presented to the PTCA for its consideration.
The nominees placed on the slate shall fulfill the requirements for the composition of the governing board outlined in the by-laws and fulfill the goals that the board reflect the racially, economically, and culturally diverse student population of the school, and that the board maintain a balance of continuity in leadership and new leadership.
In achieving these goals it is helpful if nominees have been active in the school community and/or possess specific skills that enhances the board such as finance, human resources or management, fundraising, non-profit or other governing board experience, legal, and/or media or PR experience.
Position description for all board members:
- Regularly attend all board meetings (2nd Wednesday of each month) and other board functions.
- Chair or serve on a school committee.
- Provide oversight of the Principal/Executive Director to include participating in the annual performance and compensation review of the Principal/Executive Director.
- Provide leadership in implementing the curriculum/vision/goals (including fundraising goals).
- Gather and report liaison group (e.g. committees, parents, community, etc.) concerns and ideas to the Board. Inform liaison group of Board decisions.
- Encourage teamwork within the group and facilitate communication among members.
- Serve as a positive force within the school.
This year the positions open for parent/guardian representatives include 3 General Parent Representatives and the Personnel chair with the following grade and term considerations:
- 1 Parent Representative must have a child in K, 1st or 2nd grade and serve a two year term
- 1 Parent Representative must have a child in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade and serve a two year term
- 1 Parent Representative with a child in any grade and serve a two year term
To nominate yourself or another parent/guardian, please complete the Board Nomination Form on the reverse of this letter, and place it in the folder marked "Board Nominations" in the Parent Room. This form is also available on the NCS website and may be emailed directly to Cindy Cahalen, the chair of the governing board at ccahalen@neighborhoodcharter.com. Nominations must be received on or before Monday March 31. All completed nomination forms will be available for review in the Parent Room after April 7. The vote will be held on Thursday,May 8th at the PTCA meeting.
